The impact of Waste-to-Energy incineration on climate

))).Zero Waste Europe refers to how the European Regional Development and Cohesion funds (funds that together have more than 250 billion euros available) will no longer support projects that increase residual waste treatment capacity, including incineration. In turn, the article refers to how the construction of incinerators does not comply with art. 17 of the European directive (Taxonomy Regulation) by not complying with the principle of «no significant harm».

The above, to a greater extent, due to us. The carbon intensity of electricity production based on incineration. ii. The incentive of incineration to produce waste (it uses it and pays for it as fuel, giving a market incentive to its production).

Regarding the former, as you will see in the attached report, the incineration of one ton of municipal waste (MSW) represents between 0.7 and 1.7 tons of carbon dioxide (Co2) into the atmosphere (depending mainly on the plastic content of the MSW, among other factors).

In this sense, if we compare only the Co2 of fossil origin (mainly plastic) coming from MSW incineration, we see an intensity of 580 g equivalent / kWh. This means that waste incineration has a much higher carbon footprint than electricity generation through conventional means such as Natural Gas itself (340 g equivalent / kWh).

So, we talk about it, as Euthenia Energy decided to expand in the Caribbean market, so, for us, it turns out that if that would be a great factor of competition to consider it in our proposal and futures projects.
